Colleen Hawthorne, MD

Colleen Nadine Hawthorne, MD, is a mental health physician, writer, speaker, life coach, and health and wellness consultant. She is the founder of A Renewed Mind Behavioral Health, LLC, and Colleen Hawthorne Coaching and Consulting Services. Dr. Hawthorne has practiced psychiatric medicine for over 20 years, providing services to patients from all walks of life, from people in the most deprived inner-city communities to renowned leaders and celebrated elite. As a coach and consultant, her passion and focus is providing services to health professionals, executives, and religious leaders and their families. She has a heart for serving people whose lives involve leading and helping others. Dr. Hawthorne is often sought out by leaders, due to her keen understanding and sensitivity to leaders’ needs, recognizing that leaders sometimes need a safe, emotional space where they too can to be heard, affirmed and supported. In addition to providing services through her private business entities, Dr. Hawthorne provides psychiatric services in community mental health centers in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. Recently, as an attending psychiatrist and team leader in the Department of Psychiatry at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, in Washington, DC, she proudly served our military troops and their families and trained military-enlisted psychiatric residents and medical students. Dr. Hawthorne helped to pilot the Mental Health Court Urgent Care Clinic at the District of Columbia Superior Court,while serving as Medical Director. She has also served as Regional Lead Psychiatrist for the Maryland Department of Corrections. Dr. Hawthorne formerly served on the faculty of the Emory University School of Medicine, where she was an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Attending Physician at the Emory University Hospital and Clinic. She was an elected Health Professions Advisor for prospective medical students, for the coveted Harvard University Health Professions Program. Dr. Hawthorne has held numerous leadership positions and medical directorships, in inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings, in Texas, Georgia, Maryland, and Washington, DC. Dr. Hawthorne completed her undergraduate studies in biology at Howard University, in Washington, DC, where she graduated magna cum laude. She received her doctor of medicine degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Hawthorne continued her medical training at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where she completed her internship in internal medicine, neurology and psychiatry. At Baylor, she also completed her residency in general psychiatry and fellowship in psychosomatic medicine and consultation-liaison psychiatry. Affectionately dubbed “Dr. C” by her patient’s and colleagues, Dr. Hawthorne has been a featured guest on various radio and television programs, providing expertise in the area of psychiatric medicine, mental and emotional health and wellness, and mental health and spirituality. In her forthcoming book, Dr. Hawthorne challenges people to “stop hitting the snooze button of life” and charges them to move forward on their success journeys, even in the midst of life challenges.
