Katie Hughes, PHD
Katie Hughes is an inventor and entrepreneur, whose
creative ideas have built a business with a patentpending
product that protects the knees and joints of
over 10,000 dance fitness instructors, and their students.
While pursuing her PhD in Chemistry from Princeton University, Katie, a certified
group fitness instructor with many years of experience teaching multiple
class formats, began to teach at a dance fitness class at Princeton. After
several of her students complained about knee pain and expressed their reluctance
to buy expensive dance shoes, the idea to create a straight-forward
product that solved this problem intrigued Katie. In 2010, after receiving her
PhD and while working fulltime, Katie created Slip-On Dancers™, a product
that people in fitness and dance classes could wear over a regular gym shoe
to safely spin and pivot on surfaces such as carpet, hardwood and rubber.
Since its introduction to the market, Katie has driven the company to spectacular
growth due to creative innovation and targeted marketing. She effectively
uses her scientific background and management experience to
analyze the business and to focus on creating new products and line extensions
for Slip-On Dancers™. She was a winner of the Make Mine a Million
$ Business Competition and has been featured in Women’s Entrepreneur
Magazine, the Charlotte Business Journal, and USA Today. She has been an
invited speaker on entrepreneurship at Princeton University.
Katie lives in Charlotte, NC with her husband and two dogs.
